Scripture Reading: Luke 17:11-19
"Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee…" (Luke 17:11-19, NKJV)
In this passage, we find one of the most profound lessons about gratitude. As Jesus traveled to Jerusalem, He encountered ten men afflicted with leprosy. Isolated from their communities and burdened by their condition, these men stood at a distance and cried out in unison:
“Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
Their plea is a powerful reminder that Jesus is moved by compassion. Time and again in the Gospels, we see this truth demonstrated:
- “Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately, they received their sight and followed Him.” (Matthew 20:34)
- “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick.” (Matthew 14:14)
A Command of Faith
Jesus responded to the lepers in an extraordinary way:
"Go, show yourselves to the priests.”
At first, this command might seem perplexing. They were still visibly afflicted when He spoke. Yet, as they obeyed and began their journey, they were healed. This act of obedience highlights an essential truth about faith:
Faith often requires us to move before we see the result.
The healing came as they went. It’s a powerful example of how trusting and acting on God’s Word can unlock His blessings in our lives.
The Power of Gratitude
While all ten were healed, only one returned to give thanks. Let’s break down his remarkable response:
1. He Recognized: He noticed his healing and acknowledged what had happened.
2. He Returned: Instead of continuing on his way, he made the effort to come back.
3. He Responded Radically: He praised God with a loud voice, unashamed of his gratitude.
4. He Resolved to Worship: He fell at Jesus’ feet in heartfelt thanksgiving.
This man, a Samaritan, not only received physical healing but also spiritual wholeness. Jesus said to him:
"Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
A Call to Gratitude
As we reflect on this story, let it be a reminder that God is continuously at work in our lives. How often do we, like the nine, receive His blessings but fail to return and give thanks?
In this season of Thanksgiving and beyond, let’s make gratitude our lifestyle. Let’s pause to recognize His goodness, return to His presence, respond with heartfelt praise, and resolve to worship Him daily.
A Prayer of Thanks
Lord, thank You for Your compassion and faithfulness. Teach us to live with a heart of gratitude, never taking Your blessings for granted. May we always be quick to return and give You the glory You deserve. Amen.
Have a blessed and bountiful Thanksgiving!
