The Marks of a Prayer Warrior

In the Bible, Epaphras is recognized as the founder of the Colossian church, a “servant of Christ,” and a “faithful minister.” However, one of his most notable attributes was his fervent prayer life, earning him the title of a prayer warrior. Prayer warriors are individuals who stand in the gap, interceding between God and the challenges in others’ lives. As we examine Epaphras’s example, let’s explore four key marks of a prayer warrior that can inspire and guide us in our own prayer lives.

1. Praying Constantly

Epaphras demonstrated unwavering commitment to prayer. He didn’t reserve prayer for moments of convenience but made it a continuous practice. Acts 12:5 illustrates the power of constant prayer: while Peter was imprisoned, the believers prayed fervently, and God miraculously delivered him.

Today, we are reminded of the importance of persistent prayer. Where are the prayer warriors who will intercede day and night? Let’s follow Epaphras’s example by incorporating constant prayer into our daily lives, seeking God’s blessings for ourselves and others.

2. Praying Fervently

Fervent prayer is marked by passion, intensity, and heartfelt devotion. James 5:16 says, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.” A powerful example of fervent prayer is found in the story of Hannah (1 Samuel 1:15-17), who poured out her heart to God in anguish. Her fervency not only moved God to grant her request but also showcased her unwavering faith.

To be a prayer warrior, we must pray with fervor—wholeheartedly and passionately—trusting God to respond to our prayers.

3. Praying Personally

Epaphras’s intercession was deeply personal. He prayed specifically for the believers in Laodicea, Hierapolis, and Colosse. Similarly, Jesus’s prayer in John 17 is a personal intercession for His disciples.

As prayer warriors, we’re called to pray personally for others, lifting up their specific needs before God. This personal touch reflects our love and care for those we intercede for.

4. Praying in God’s Will

Epaphras’s prayers were aligned with God’s will. He sought not only for believers to know God’s will but also to live it fully. This was especially significant in the face of false teachings, as he prayed for the believers to mature in their faith and experience God’s fullness.

Aligning our prayers with God’s will ensures that our intercessions are grounded in His truth and purpose. As John 14:6 reminds us, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life—our prayers should reflect that divine truth.

Additional Traits of a Prayer Warrior

Beyond these marks, prayer warriors exhibit humility, discernment, patience, and a servant’s heart. They are committed to serving others and seeking God’s guidance in every aspect of their prayer lives.

As we reflect on Epaphras’s life, let us strive to embody these qualities and become steadfast prayer warriors for our families, communities, and the world. Through constant, fervent, personal, and God-aligned prayers, we can make a profound impact for His kingdom.

Let’s begin today.
